The actor and his family have announced their relocation to Nevada in search of a ‘better life’
Another celebrity announced they are leaving California. This time it is actor Mark Wahlberg. He’s headed to Nevada with his wife, model Rhea Durham, and their four children. The move to Nevada will allow the star of “The Departed” and “Three Kings” to enjoy a zero percent state income tax, a lucrative change from California’s 13.3 percent for people in higher tax brackets.
“I want to be able to work from home,” the Massachusetts native said in an interview with The Talk. “I moved to California many years ago to pursue acting and I’ve only made a couple of movies in the entire time that I was there. So, to be able to give my kids a better life and follow and pursue their dreams, whether it be my daughter as an equestrian, my son as a basketball player, my younger son as a golfer, this made a lot more sense for us.”
The family’s estate in Beverly Park was put on the market for $87.5 million last spring, according to KTLA 5. The estate sports 12 bedrooms and 20 baths. He bought the estate in 2009 for $8.25 million, but has added to it. If the sale goes through at that price, the profit could cost him up to $10 million in California taxes.
Wahlberg and his family join a long train of celebrities and business leaders who have fled California’s high cost of living and cultural shifts. Among them are Elon Musk, Tiger Woods, Joe Rogan, Rosario Dawson and Rob Schneider. For some the Golden State may be tarnished, but the state still accounts for the fifth largest economy in the world.
